What to ask your stylist when going gray

Most grow-outs go wrong in the salon chair, not at home. You say “I want to go gray,” your stylist hears something different, and you leave with a full cover or a stripe you didn’t expect. The fix is simple: walk in with the words already chosen.

Before you book

Look for a stylist who has taken other clients gray. Ask when you call, and look for transition photos in their work. A consult is worth booking on its own, before any color service.

Bring:

  • Photos of your roots in daylight, from the front, the crown and the side
  • What you use now: salon permanent, box dye, demi or henna
  • Your route, if you’ve picked one, and your budget for the whole transition

Say exactly what you want

Start with the goal, your starting point and the route. For example:

“I’m growing out my color to my natural silver. I’m a medium brown now with about three quarters gray, mostly at the crown. I’d like to blend the line, not cover it.”

Then say what you don’t want. If you’re not ready for a big cut, say so. If you want to avoid lightening, say so.

Questions to ask

  1. How many visits do you expect before I’m fully grown out?
  2. What will each visit cost, and what’s included?
  3. How far apart should I book?
  4. What’s your plan if my ends go brassy?
  5. Have you taken other clients gray?

Write the answers down. A clear quote now saves surprises later.

Tell them what’s on your hair

If you’ve used box dye, henna, or anything with red or copper tones, say so plainly. These can behave unpredictably under lightening, so a strand test is essential before any lightening or color removal.

Safety at every visit

Ask for a patch test before any dye, demi or toner, every time, even with a product you’ve used before. The FDA advises this because some dyes can cause allergic reactions.

If you’ve ever reacted to hair dye, with itching, burning or swelling, skip color services and talk to a doctor or dermatologist first. If your scalp itches or burns during or after a service, stop, rinse, and contact a healthcare provider.

Red flags

Consider a second opinion if your stylist:

  • Pushes a full cover when you’ve asked to grow out
  • Won’t do a strand test before lightening
  • Can’t tell you roughly how many visits or what they’ll cost
  • Suggests at-home bleaching between visits
